Call for Applications for the Inaugural University Scholars Leadership Symposium

The Inaugural University Scholars Leadership Symposium from 1 – 7 August 2010 in Malacca, Malaysia is now open for applications. A total of seven (7) undergraduate students of the Ateneo are invited to attend. The symposium allows young leaders the opportunity to understand more about the global humanitarian need, to learn how to organize a humanitarian relief and be challenged in their worldview.

Australian Diplomat Geraldine Cox, who has devoted her life to the Homeless Children in Cambodia, and Nobel Peace Prize candidate Tim Peters who will share his experience on humanitarian relief for North Korea citizens are some of the speakers scheduled to share at the event.

The registration fee of USD700 includes six (6) night accommodation at a 4-Stars Hotel (Mahkota Melaka), meals (3 Meals + 2 Coffee Breaks per day), local transportation, field trips, site visits, guest lectures, workshop discussions, a souvenir T-shirt, Certificate of Participation, an Official Welcoming Dinner host by the Melaka State Government, and more importantly, the opportunity to network with future World Leaders. Participants are expected to cover their own airfare.

Ateneo de Manila University Wins Philippine Debate Championship

April 14, 2010

The Ateneo Debate Society (ADS) from Ateneo de Manila University won the Philippine Inter-Collegiate Debating Championship (PIDC) that culminated on April 12, 2010 . The tournament was organized by the University of the Philippines Diliman Debate Society and hosted over 300 college students from different institutions all over the country. The grand finals this year had the distinction specifically of being an all-Ateneo affair, with ADMU Team A on side Negative and ADMU Team B on side Affirmative.

The champion team of ADMU B, composed of Patrick Cocabo, Cecile Gotamco, and Danielle de Castro, successfully affirmed the motion in the finals round: “This house believes that UN peace-keepers should be tried by an international body instead of to their nation states” against fellow Ateneo team ADMU A, composed of Vincenzo Tagle, Jonathan Chu, and Walter Wong. De Castro was later on named the Best Speaker of the finals. Ateneo was also represented well in the tournament’s Top Ten Best Speakers list, featuring Chu (2nd), Tagle (4th), De Castro (5th), and Gotamco (9th).

Ateneo de Manila virtually won the tournament as early as the semifinals. Both ADMU A and ADMU B made statement victories in this round, advancing past UP Diliman A and UP Manila A, respectively, both of last year’s finalist teams, with UP Diliman A as the defending champions. Both semifinal rounds debated on the motion, “This house would invest in research that aims to bring the dead back to life.”

ADMU A and B were the 1st and 2nd of the tournament’s top 16 teams by the end of the preliminary rounds, outranking all 6 teams from UP Diliman, 3 teams from UP Manila, 2 teams from de La Salle University, and 1 team each from Xavier University and Far Eastern University. ADMU A emerged at the top of the preliminary rounds with a perfect 7-0 win-loss record, with ADMU B following closely at the second spot with 6-1. ADMU E, composed of Andrea Bernarte, Joshua Lim, and Angelo Garcia made up the 3rd Ateneo team to qualify for the elimination rounds, with a breaking score of 5-2, which garnered the team the top 15th slot in the tournament. Unfortunately, they lost to ADMU B in the Octofinals, debating the motion, “This house believes that the media should fully report on suicides.”

All of the ADS adjudicators, namely, Pamela Chan, Lisha Bornilla, Alexa Fortun, Steffi Sales, and Bian Villanueva were qualified to judge in the break rounds. Chan headed an adjudication panel at the semifinal round of the Sinag Cup, while Bornilla was a panelist in the Sinag Cup finals. She also paneled in the quarterfinal and octofinal rounds, along with Fortun, Sales, and Villanueva. By the semifinal rounds, all of the ADS adjudicators were conflicted out of the debates. The tournament’s Top Ten Best Adjudicators were bracketed by Chan and Bornilla, who finished first and tenth, respectively. Furthermore, Angelica Mangahas, ADS president of SY ’09-’10, had been nominated as Deputy Chief Adjudicator of the tournament this year, representing the school as part of the Adjudication Core.

The Ateneo Debate Society will be defending its title as champion of the Asian Universities Debating Championship, which will be held this coming May in Bangkok, Thailand.

Call for Applications for Nakhon Ratchasim Rajaphat University (NRRU)

The Nakhon Ratchasima Rajaphat University (NRRU) in Thailand is offering an NRRU International Scholarship Scheme for academic year 2010 to qualified students from ASEAN Member States. The scholarship scheme provides three (3) scholarships for the undergraduate level and five (5) scholarships for the graduate level. Tuition fees, health insurance and monthly allowance will be covered by the scholarship. Please note, however, that Thai will be used as the medium of instruction.

Call for Applications for Pai Chai International Summer School

Pai Chai University of Daegu, Korea is inviting undergraduate students of the Ateneo de Manila University to join the “Pai Chai International Summer School.” Participants of this program will not only learn the Korean language, but also the history, politics, society and culture of the country. Moreover, they will have the opportunity to experience these for themselves through organized activities and field trips.

Students have the option of participating in either the three-week program in July or the two-week program in August. The registration fees differ, though: USD700 for the former and USD544 for the latter. This is inclusive of tuition, accommodation, bedding, textbook, insurance and other miscellaneous expenses.

Call for Applications for DREaM 2010 at Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Undergraduate students of the Ateneo de Manila University are invited to attend DREaM 2010, the international student summer camp of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), which will be held at Yogyakarta, Indonesia from July 12 – 25, 2010.

DREaM 2010 aims to embrace all differences of background, nationality, idealism, and religion by conducting research based activities in three realms of interests: (1) small medium enterprises, (2) post-disaster management, and (3) community empowerment. The theme for this year is “Preparing Global Future Leaders for Better Awareness and Mutual Understanding among Nations.” The program hopes to utilize the interfaith cooperation approach as praxis in creating a better tomorrow.

The program focuses on a series of lectures from academicians, experts, and practitioners in the particular field subsequent to each core of DREaM. Excursions are also organized for participants to further comprehend the topics discussed. Furthermore, they will also take part in a three day immersion experience wherein they will be living with the local community of Yogyakarta. DREaM 2010 will then cumulate to a world youth assembly.

those nominated by their departments for the SOSE Research Awards.
Since they have been selected by their departments, they automatically
receive Departmental Research Awards.

After the Semi-final round, the Board of Judges will choose two
finalists who will prepares Oral Presentations of their Research.
This will be held at 4 pm on March 1 in the Math Lab, SEC A 303.

The winners will be announced on March 5 at 6 pm in Escaler Hall.

IN CASE OF FORESEEN ABSENCE DURING THE PABAON ON MARCH 6, 2010

(1) Write a letter addressed to Mr. Rene Salvador R. San Andres (Associate Dean for Student Affairs (ADSA) and Integrated Non-Academic Formation (INAF) Coordinator) , stating the reason(s) for your foreseen absence in the Pabaon on March 6, 2010. Please include your complete name, ID number, and updated contact information (mobile, email address, landline, etc) in the letter.

(2) Attach all relevant / supporting documents to validate / authenticate the reasons you stated in the letter.

(3) Submit your letter along with the supporting documents to the ADSA Office. Any ADSA personnel is authorized to receive your letter and documents.

(4) Upon deliberation of the Pabaon Core Team, you will receive a memo on or before March 10, 2010 as to the next steps you should take.

NOTE: Failure to comply with any of the conditions set by the Pabaon Core Team will mean that you will not be eligible to join the Graduation Rites on March 26 or 27, 2010.
